Preserving Water for Better Living
Introduction
With population that grows every minutes and the weather that are never predictable, we have to start to worry about water, our precious supply would be so limited in the future that water are more costly to get and maybe will come to a stage that people have to drank the water of the sea because of there’s no fresh water left. H2O are another name for water because it’s formed when 2 molecules of Hydrogen and 1 molecule of Oxygen are combined. So water are also an important chemical substance for gases such as Oxygen that we breathe everyday and night. It’s essential for supporting all form of livings on earth, including humans.
Australia has been through a harsh summer lately and there’s severe drought in most parts of the ground has finally lighten up issues regarding of the water supply throughout the whole nation.
For those who have been living in urban areas and grown up in the cities, they are quite blurry about why water has to be such a big deal. After all, pipes are connected to us everywhere and water that supplied to us are near to free of charge and what we would have to do is just turn the tap on and there will be fresh water flows. Fresh water supplies are always there ready for us to be use for out daily living. Therefore, we have thought that water will be there forever to nourish us and water never listed as one of the problems that we might face in the future until now. Things tends to get pricy just like what other things are that we need for survival when the supply gone low. The always price-raising petrol are one of a good reason that why water should start to preserved now before it’s too late.
The Economic Equation
Most of the Australian’s are expecting that taxes, rates and water bills would cover up the cost of water supply. But if this keeps on, we wouldn’t and shouldn’t be surprise that water would cost that much in future because that’s caused by us in the past.
This isn’t as hard as calculus that needed much of thinking, it’s just a simple economic equation - when the demands for water are rising and at a time that water supplies are limited. Just like others in the marketplace, as demand increases and supply falls, prices would rise.
Things are, demand from the up growing population and the increasing needs from agriculture, industry and the environment never stops.
And what at worst are, water supply in Australia are always been subject to the summer days and droughts, but now that we’ve experienced rainfall level that are lower than the years before had made this far harsher than ever to raise the water supply in Australia.
Habits Changed for Better Tomorrow
We should have exercise better attitude from now on and action are to be taken to change our water consumption habits because fortunately, things could improve rather than going worst by starting to do something that will contribute to increasing the water supply while reducing the overwhelming demand of it.
So we would have to commit to less water using lifestyle, recycling of water and collecting rainwater whenever there’s a rainy day. I will be sharing tips on things that we can do while at home to form a better future by starting off using water wisely from now on.
Fact :
The amount of water on Earth hasn’t changed in the last two billion years. It’s just that we now have many more people wanting a share of our planet’s precious water supply. In fact, the Earth’s population has increased six-fold over the past 200 years from about 1 billion to 6.6 billion.
The Magic of Water
Water is an amazing substance that is ever changing. Fact are that, it’s the only substance that you can found on Earth naturally in all three states which is solid when as ice, liquid and gas as water vapor all depend at what temperature it in.
There’s about 1,460 teratonnes of water covering Earth’s surface, which could be found mostly in the oceans as saltwater that is inconsumable and also in the form of the polar icecaps. It’s too present on Earth in the air as vapor or clouds, and precipitation. There’s also water can be found in rivers, lakes, animals, plant bodies and nonetheless human bodies.
Clean water are undoubtedly essential for supporting all forms of living creature on Earth. Approximately two-thirds of the human body are made up of water and if you’re experiencing dehydrated you would probably be dead soon if you didn’t boost back the water that you’ve lost.
Water are used in various daily activities in our lives, we drank it when we’re feeling thirsty, we use it to cook our meals, we play and swam in it, we wash things and bathing using it and water helps produce almost everything we ate, drank and used.
Amount of Water on Earth
There’s a famous line in the epic poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, written in 1789, where the sailors on board a ship was lost, floating at sea, said :” Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink”.
The world population has made this line becoming increasingly relevant. Undoubtedly, there’s of course no shortage of water on Earth, but there’s only limited and tiny proportion of it is drinkable.
Fact is that if you could collect all the water on Earth and poured it into one-liter bottles, you would get more than 100billions on counting of bottles of water. Another word means, there’s around 1.398 billion cubic kilometers of water available on Earth.
Sadly to say that, there’s 97% of it are salt water in the ocean, and a further 2.25% locked up in glaciers and ice fields. So that totals out 0.75% available as fresh water but most of that is inaccessible groundwater.
That have shown that the line are quite true about water, indeed there’s water everywhere, but scientist estimated that only about 0.01% of the Earth’s water supply is available for drinking at one time. That is an anonymously small percentage to satisfy such a big crowds of living creatures.
Impacts of Climate Change
World’s scientist now generally agrees that the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gasses on Earth’s atmosphere are causing our climate changes. And undoubtedly that climate is one of the fundamental drivers of the water cycle that determines both how much water is available on the land and how much water is needed.
According to the CSIRO an organization that works throughout Australia, that climate change “superimposes on the natural variability” in our weather patterns and it is becoming a threat to the sustainability of irrigation systems, water systems, farming systems and dry land landscapes.
Fact :
A person who lives in developed nations use more water than people who lives in developing nations. Per head of population, Australian are ranked as the third highest domestic water consumers in the world. Americans are in the front leading for water consumption, they use an average of 580 liters per day, per person. British are the next who uses an average of 330 liters per day and Australian 260 liters. In Africa, average use of water is just 47 liters per person, per day.
Australia Bureau of Meteorology has reported that Australia’s average annual rainfall has always varied considerably from year to year. And over the past year, many of Australia’s most densely populated areas have received lowest rainfall levels ever. The rainfall deficiencies have mainly affected the most of the nation’s people.
Water Flows
Australia consumed 18,767 gigaliters of water in 2004-2005 as a nation, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In terms of water volume, amazingly that’s equivalent of 37.5 Sydney Harbors. Primarily water was used in agriculture 65%, homes 11%, and industry 10%.
It appears that household use a relatively small amount of national water supply compared to business use, but the fact is not. Water consumptions for cities such as Sydney and Melbourne are reported that households are the largest single category of water consumption in Australia’s major urban areas. It is estimated by The Victorian government that 60% of Melbourne’s water is consumed by households and only a mere 28% goes to commercial and industry purposes.
In addition, the water that people living in Sydney uses at home reported to be 70% of the city’s total water consumption, whereas only 20% for commercial and industrial.
Fact :
There’s also reported sewerage, drainage and water loss consumes 11% on the nationally statistic of Australia and a 8% of leakages in the city of Melbourne.
Water Usage in a typical* Australian home
15% in laundry, 5% in kitchen, 35% in garden, 26% in bathroom and 19% in toilet.
*the information are based on average uses of water for an Australian household in Melbourne because there’s differences between types of homes, lifestyles and there’s region that are subject to unpredictably weather conditions.
We all have the ability to help reduce our water usage in each of the corner in our homes by starting to implement the following things and feeling good by doing it.
At Home
With our water supplies on stake, and water demand that increases every minute, we must and have to change our habits to preserve water in Australia to guarantee’s a lives of better future.
Most of the time we may find it’s hard to swift our behavioral patterns, but with our water supply and our future at stakes, eventually we have to really start to doing things differently than what we used to. There are three simple things that we can start at to help raise the current water supplies which are at short:
Firstly, look for alternative water sources, exercise good habits by re-cycling water and last reduce the amount of water usage.
We can cut down our reliance’s on public water by made use of the rainwater by installing a water tank that captures rainwater that falls on the roof of our homes.
Most of the local councils now require fresh houses to install water tank as part of the planning approval process in Australia. This new requirement of planning approval tends to create a more self-sufficient house and thus helps reduce dependence on our limited water supplies.
There’s area in Australia that are possible to get water sources such as local dams.
There’s something called “grey water”, which mean it only contains a small amount of contaminants in the water that are re-usable other than drinking and intake purposes. There’s large amount of grey water produces in a household through shower, washing machines and sinks that can be used in toilets, to nourish garden and eventually put a save on money too. You may start to consider modifying your household pipe linkage to fully utilize the water. If this seems to be a good solution that suites your lifestyle and that you do like gardening, action should be taken. There’s a sophisticated systems that are readily to be installed to automate the distribution of grey water in a household. But you can always start by doing the basic by just using a bucket or more to capture water before it flows away into the drainage.
Think When You Use
Think ahead before you turn the tap on next time and let the water run free and you will eventually awaken to a state that you’d notice that most of the thing we can change in our lifestyle that would save up a lot of water, what we need is just apply the common senses that we already know. These involve around simply trying to be more conscious the next time you turn your tap on. There’s many things that you could do to saving water from inside the house till garden.
Inner
As shown above, we know that there’s 65%* of water in an Australian household are consumed inside the house mainly for cooking meals, cleaning and sanitation of clothes and inner house or simply just to satisfy our thirst.
Bathroom: The time before you turn on the water tap and let the cold water run through while waiting for hot water to comes in, put a bucket there to capture water that are unused. The bucket of water can be next used in your garden or to substitutes a toilet flush by pouring it in. Get your bathroom to install a water-saving shower rose and you will be surprise that a yearly $100 bills will be cut down and you could save water that equivalent to fill a large domestic swimming pool. By cutting down your shower time by even a minute too would help saving you about three thousand liter per person each year that equals to thousand glasses of water. If you think that a bath would wash away your tiredness after a day work, you could do it by taking a good night sleep too. By avoiding bath, you could save water that equals to up to three times of shower that you could take in for another day. When you’re brushing your teeth, start it by just wetting your toothbrush and standby a glass of water to rinse your mouth after you’ve done. And please do turn off the tap while you’re brushing, this would helps save up the water that are wasted that can be in good use. It applies to the water that wasted when you’re rinsing your razor under a constantly running tap. Simply run a some water into a plugged sink while shaving.
What you could do when you’re in a toilet? Well there’s something you can do, such as convert your single flush toilet into a dual. This can cut half the water per flush. And after you’ve installed a dual flush system, remember to use the half flush more than a full flush whenever you can. After all there’s no point installing things that you would never use right? Constantly check on the cistern would help cutting down contributing to water leakages and wastage.
Laundry: Be considerate, by only running a washing machine when you have a full load because every time you turn it on, it consumes about 120 liters of water. If you do need to do your laundry but it isn’t full yet, there’s always a load adjustment button on it, so please use it to set it to match your needs. If you’re using a top loader, converting it to a front loader would save up your water and energy bill, because a front loader uses 60% less water, 30% less power and they only require half of the amount of detergent that a top loader would need. Get a water-efficient grey water system that runs the after laundry water to your garden.
There’s a lot that you could done in a kitchen too, when you’re waiting for the hot water, save the cold one by filling it in a jug. It can be used later to nourish indoor plants or simply fill the water kettle to boil it for drinking purposes later. When cleaning dishes, use a plugged sink of hot water and detergent, then dip the dishes in it to remove stains and prepare a cold plugged sink of water to rinse the detergent off. Avoid using a dishwasher machine, frankly speaking, that dishwasher machine aren’t that efficient than hand cleaning. But, if you do need to use it, remember to have a full load before you activate it. When preparing raw material before cooking, wash them in a plugged kitchen sink instead of under a flowing tap.
Outer
Most of the areas in Australia now are under water restriction that what we’ve to be done now are probably shifting the water wasting habits that much of the water are wasted in a garden. I’m not suggesting that you should just kill off your garden to save water, there’s ways to having a garden and saving water at the same time. Before you start to planning new plants, try choosing from a variety of native plants that are suited to be planted in your area that would be drought proof and efficiently design your garden before you start planting. Use mulch to prevent evaporation and of course they’re cheap and easy manageable that make the most of water in your garden. Consider using a drip system to watering your plants and control the flow by using a trigger hose so water can be retained. It requires quite an amount of water to sustain a lawn, so be considerate when planning, substitute with a hardy ground cover instead. On watering plants, try water less frequently, but more thoroughly this would encourage plants to extend their roots deeper to the ground where there’s more moisture thus making them hardier and less thirsty. And remember to water the plant only after sun set to prevent water loses through evaporation. If your paths are dirty, never use a host to wash down paths unless there’s really a need, always use a broom instead and this would stretch your arms and makes you healthier too. Installing rainwater tank before droughts. This would helps reduce water and energy bill and thus nourish yourself and your garden when summer time.
Conclusion
Water are one of our precious resources that we should have extent and exercise good behavior when using it. For a life giving substance that support our life and nourishes our needs we should show greatly respect and think wise before turning on the taps and let the water runs.
